I hear the struggles from artists and musicians all the time. Two of the most common challenges are not finishing and releasing music and not being able to post content or grow their audience. There are many reasons we can point to for these struggles, but one specific issue stands out today: lack of focus.
One thing that might be holding you back is that you're being pulled in too many directions, taking on too many projects, and stretching yourself too thin.
Here are a few scenarios that might resonate with you:
- How many songs are you working on right now? Probably a lot—5, 10, maybe even 20. While working toward a body of work like an album or EP has its advantages, it comes with significant drawbacks. It takes far longer to finish 10 songs than it does to focus on completing just one. I know this firsthand because I’ve been there, juggling 10-20 songs at once. When I finally zero in on just one song, dedicating my full attention to bringing it across the finish line, it actually gets done.
This principle rings true for the artists I’ve seen achieve significant growth. When I ask about their workflow, I notice they focus on very few songs (or projects) at a time. High-output artists often concentrate on finishing just one song while simultaneously preparing all the necessary release assets—artwork, videos, banners, social media posts, etc.
- Singularity of focus applies to business as well. High achievers often grow their businesses by focusing on one venture at a time. They even narrow that focus further, homing in on one system, input, or output at a time. This pattern emerges consistently in conversations about success and failure with business professionals and artists alike.
Balancing Focus with Variety
I’ve been working to implement singularity of focus in my own business, and it’s also something I teach. However, I understand this advice can feel contradictory. After all, releasing music, growing your audience, and building a business require a variety of tasks and skills. You must diversify your efforts to manage platforms like Spotify, SoundCloud, YouTube, your website, and social media.
But here’s the key: boil your projects down to just one or two at a time. By doing this, you’ll streamline your workflow and shorten the timeline to achieving your goals.
Why Focus is a Superpower
When you divide your energy across too many projects, you dilute your effectiveness. Focusing on one project at a time amplifies your momentum. Think of it as a magnifying glass harnessing sunlight—when the rays are focused, they become powerful enough to start a fire.
This same principle applies to your creative and business pursuits. When you give a single project your undivided attention, it ignites progress. The quality of your work improves, and your ability to finish grows exponentially.
Encouragement for Artists and Entrepreneurs
To all the creators, dreamers, and hustlers out there: know that your journey doesn’t need to be perfect. Progress is made step by step, not all at once. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your to-do list or a backlog of unfinished songs, pause. Take a deep breath. Then choose one thing to work on today.
Imagine the ripple effect of finishing and releasing just one great song. It could be the start of building momentum, creating buzz, and connecting with your audience. From there, you can grow a catalog, a brand, and a legacy.
In business, the same principle applies. Instead of trying to master every social media platform or perfect every system at once, pick one priority. Perhaps it’s building a killer website, launching your first paid ad campaign, or crafting a powerful artist bio. Success often comes not from doing everything but from doing the right things in the right order.
Your Call to Action
This week, challenge yourself to apply the singularity of focus. Write down all your current projects, then choose just one to move forward with. Commit to finishing it before moving on. Whether it’s a song, a video, or a business system, give it your all.
Remember, clarity comes from action. Every step you take builds confidence and brings you closer to your dreams. As you focus your energy, watch how opportunities open up, your audience grows, and your art flourishes.
Stay consistent, stay focused, and keep creating. Your success is within reach—one step, one project, and one song at a time.
